Question:
The Super-Bowl is bigger than the World Cup final? Agree or disagree?

I come equipped with facts. The Super-Bowl averages about 1 billion viewers world-wide, that is greater than the World Cup final (750,000). The Superbowl half-time shows have included: Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, U2, the Who etc. Two of televisions top 5 highest ever rated Programs in history have been Super-bowls. I know Soccer is played in more countries than anything else but in terms of size and popularity the Super-bowl is the biggest sporting event in the world (next to the opening ceremony of the Olympics).

I don't know where exactly you got your "facts" from, but they are way off. The Super Bowl doesn't get anywhere near the 1 Billion mark, it barely reaches the 100 Million mark. Where did you get those numbers from? I don't get what entertainment has to do with anything, when we are talking about a SPORTING Event. "Two of televisions top 5 highest ever rated Programs in history have been Super-bowls", you're only speaking of United States, you're not speaking World Wide. There's no sense in saying the Super Bowl is bigger than the World Cup Final. Here are some links that I post, they are not just opinions by me, they are based on facts.

This article is based from 2006, when the last World Cup took place, in comparison to the rest of the sporting events of that year:

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/article/108500

(As you can see on the Graph, the Super Bowl can be compared world-wide to a UEFA Champions League Final, but cannot be compared to the FIFA World Cup Final, let alone the whole World Cup. Or in other words, the Super Bowl can be compared to any game of the World Cup, considering the average audience of any game, besides the later rounds and Final, were estimated at 93-98 Million average per game in '06.)

The 2009 Super Bowl (most watched Super Bowl of all time) only had 98 Million viewers, compare that to the 260-some Million that watched the World Cup Final (which is not the most watched Final in history.)

Are you sure those are the right numbers. There is no way the world cup final only gets 750000 viewers. Maybe drop another three zeros on that. The only people who watch the Super Bowl are, generally, people who watch all sports and Americans. The reason it has all those preformers is because American culture is all about the show. So they have a huge halftime show, which is part of the event. Its a differant setting to the WCF which is all about the football. Not saying the SB isn't, but its about the day and the event as well as the game. If yuo get what I'm saying.

Let's all take a minute to laugh at this stupid suggestion.

The Super Bowl generates 1 billion viewers - I'm sorry to bust your bubble but that is not true. The population of the U.S. is 300 million. Assuming that every American watches the Super Bowl, did you seriously believe that 700 million other people will watch it?

The Super Bowl officially generates only 100 million viewers - all of them are American (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl#Television_coverage_and_ratings). This is because outside of the U.S. nobody knows what the f*ck the Super Bowl is. Due to the half-time shows, many people around the world actually think the Super Bowl is a concert - and fair enough, I mean who the hell names a sporting event the "Super Bowl"?

The World Cup final generates 750 million worldwide viewers. The cumulative audience at the 2006 FIFA World Cup was 26.29 billion. Yes that's 26.29 BILLION.

Even the 2006 FIFA World Cup draw (i.e. not the actual World Cup, but placing the countries into groups) was watched by 300 million worldwide - three times larger than the 100 million who watched the Super Bowl.

Please, if the draw for the FIFA World Cup is three times larger than the Super Bowl, don't even compare the actual FIFA World Cup Final to the Super Bowl. It's not even a contest.

EDIT: Okay so I've found out where you got the 1 billion Super Bowl viewers from - and it was your misunderstanding. The NFL states that the Super Bowl has a "potential" audience of 1 billion people (i.e. 1 billion people worldwide are able to watch the Super Bowl on TV). The fact that only 100 million choose to watch the Super Bowl means that out of every 10 people worldwide who can watch the Super Bowl, only 1 person chooses to do so. The other 9 people feel they have something better to watch on TV. Quite a popular sport I must say.

The NFL spend a lot of millions televising the Super Bowl to Planet Earth, The Solar System and the Milky Way. the problem is that NO BODY WATCHES IT!

The Women World Cup has more world-wide TV viewers than the Super Bowl. (super bowl-2013 had 112.5 millions according to Nielsen Research Center)

The Super Bowl is not even close to the World Cup. The only reason why half the people watch it is because of the commercials. The World Cup Final doesn't need funny commercials or halftime shows. It is only the beautiful game. Unlike the Super Bowl, it is played every four years, so NFL teams have a chance to win more often than World Cup teams. Unlike the Olympics, which are also held every four years, there is only one winner. So, basically, the World Cup is a tournament that shows which country is the best at the most popular sport, while the Super Bowl is one football game that shows which NFL team is the best in only one country. You tell me: which one is bigger?

Hahahaha hell no.

Your facts are not accurate.

"...But the NFL doesn’t know how many people outside the United States actually watch the game, nor has the league ever “provided the media a figure of total worldwide viewership,” said Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman."

" The closest anyone has come to gauging global Super Bowl ratings is a tracking system devised by the New York-based media research firm Initiative, which collects data from 54 of the major TV markets from around the world. According to Initiative’s most recent measurement, Super Bowl XL posted an average audience of 98 million, with 151 million tuning in at some point.

If you’re number-crunching, that’s 849 million short of a billion.

One 2006 sporting event did come close to the 1 billion mark: The World Cup final between Italy and France drew an average audience of 260 million, and 603 million people saw at least part of the game."

World cup is waaaaaaay bigger.

edit: Dang it DM! You beat me to this question! =P

Your facts are rubbish. The last super bowl had a audience of about 92 million mostly U.S and Canada. The last world cup had a viewing audience of a billion.

The facts are that the super bowl is played on Sunday at about 6:30 P.M. kick off eastern time, that makes it 11:30 P.M. U.K. time and further into Europe and Asia it's early hours Monday morning. Do you realise that people are going to work in Ausralia when the super bowl is on?

People just don't stay up all night to watch an obscure American game when they have to work Monday morning. Use some common sense and stop talking BS.

Comparing the Super Bowl to the World Cup Final is comparing apples to oranges. In the U.S.A most homes have multiple tvs in some of these other countries if they've even seen one they're likely to think a TV is a magical box that traps spirits

Your numbers are off.

1. World Cup

2. Olympics

3. Brazil F1 Race (May be different since Abu Dhubai is the new closing track)

4. Champions League

5. Any large Cricket Game

6. Super Bowl

You know you are lying when you say "averages about 1 billion" for the Super Bowl but yet you have exact numbers on the World Cup Final?

Sorry bud, your sport it Shyt

Don't know where you got your numbers from but they seem waaaay off to me. As an Australian I don't know a single person who has an interest in the Super bowl, while all non soccer fans will watch a few games of WC and possibly the final.

Considering the WC final is usually live between 12am and 4am and the SuperBowl is around 6am here i could possibly see where you are coming from, but again not a single person i've ever met likes NFL (probably got something to do with our own codes of 'football')

And the WC doesn't need Micheal Jackson, million dollar ads or other distractions.

Ummmm...what were your SOURCES for your FACTS.

To sum it up, I don't think the Super bowl can even be compared the the World Cup, because American football is not even comparable to the greatest sport on earth, Real Football :P

Needless to say I don't really need any facts to prove you wrong because everyone above me has provided a source for their facts that the World Cup is 10x better than the Super Bowl.

Edit: And I loved how you said "equipped", is this war or something? Or do you just play Modern Warfare 2 and think you can say a term like "equipped". :P

Super Bowl the biggest sporting event?

The world cup has people who are from every nook and cranny of the world watching it. And your facts are wrong, the 2006 final was watched by over 1.2billion people.

The world cup is too prestigious to be compared, sorry no competition here.

Hahahaha what are you a troll? Im sorry but seriously out of 300million americans i would assume that only 230 million americans watch it. Thousands from Mexico, about 3 million from Europe maybe, 1 million from Japan and a few thousands from Israel. But really tried comparing that to a WORLD cup. Thats right boy i said World. YOu would have about 800 million viewers.

I live in the city where the Super Bowl is going to be held this year and guess when I found out? TWO WEEKS AGO?

Why? Because idgaf.

I'm an "American" and trust me not even everyone here is interested. Your numbers are wayyyyy off.

The World Cup beats everything,

Why would more people watch a mess of fat guys in helmets from two random cities?

You are kidding right? Football WC is far more popular, it is watched by all countries around the world, while the "super bowl" is watched by yanks who love to watch men play in pads... LOL. Yeah teh super bowl is bigger than the world cup final, you are right.

PS what is so super about the bowl?

Your figures are way off:P 715.1 million people watching the 2006 final, 151.6 million people watched the last superbowl. Lets see, that means that the world cup had 4-5 times as many people watching.

And the 2006 final isnt even the most watched year: http://www.allbusiness.com/entertainment-arts/broadcasting-industry/5979939-1.html Nelson claims 1.5 billion watched the 2002 World Cup final!!!!

no way. Kickers have never been killed for missing a field goal or an extra point. Soccer players on the other hand have. I don't know where you got your numbers from but they seem way off. Soccer is a world wide sport. football not so much. and no I don't like soccer i'm a San Diego Chargers fan.

dude, you are wrong, football (or how you americans call it soccer, where did you get that name by the way?)is better and more viewed around the world! fifa world cup is at the first place, worldwide, second place goes to uefa champions league, superbowl, may be 6th or 7th place.

As much as the NFL wishes to have such a high claim. Soccer is popular all over the world. Why would anyone try to claim that football would have more viewers? Football like baseball is not popular around the world.Only a few countries like it. Over 200 countries try for the World Cup.That must say how popular it is..Makes sense as to why it would have more viewers.
