Question:
Do you remeber how Brazil was struggling in qualifications for WC 2002...?
Maradona Jr. _ A.C.A.B.

.. which they won then btw... they qualified to the world cup in last game (and with a help of Uruguay that got only 3 points out of last 3 games to end up on 5th place) and were in similar position as Argentina now but at the WC they were the best team of the tournament. Can Argentina do the same thing... of course that Brazil had much stronger team with Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafu, R.Carlos etc but that same team (Ronaldo was injured for most of qualifications and Romario played most of the games) struggled in qualifications too and most of the players weren't big stars at the time (except for Ronaldo, Rivaldo, R.Carlos and Denilson) so it's very similar situation as in Argetnina.... can Argentina surprise the whole world???? Only real competition are Brazil and Spain anyway, so if they can avoid them on their way to the final anything can happen, just look at Itay in 2006, they had VERY easy way to the final and then they even won on penalties when it was obvious that they're much weaker team.... if Italy had the luck why not Maradona and Argentina.

ARGENTINA needs a new COaCH someone with experice or someone that simply knows about coaching

with a different coach the team will get better diego doesnt call on some of argentinas great players just cuz they dissagree with diegos way of coaching or simply because diego doenst like them!

like riquelme, samuel, zaneti, cambiaso, airmar, will for sure be starters with another coach

I actually do make that same argument but I think the key difference between that Brasilian side and this Argentina side is the fact that Brasil were showing signs of some improvement once Scolari had taken over. I think the big story then was the exclusion of Romario.

Argentina has not shown any signs of improvement. They were very lucky to win against Peru and Uruguay in these past two qualifying games. I will still argue that Iniesta or Xavi should be given more of a shout to win the WOTY or Ballon D'Or since they both have had impacts for Barcelona and Spain respectively. Messi has looked awful and uncomfortable when playing for Argentina.

Can Argentina surprise the world? Yes, Football is a funny game and to win the WC, it is a matter of timing in regards to the squad playing well together at the right time and having a bit of luck on your side.

I do feel there is more competition than Brasil and Spain.

I would argue Chile and Paraguay can cause some problems and the teams in Africa are looking quite strong like the Ivory Coast and Ghana.

@the clown prince.....Your basing your argument on coincidence.....but very interesting that you bring them up. Records are meant to be broken. Brasil never won a WC Qualifying match in Montevideo and recently beat Uruguay not long ago in the Centenario.

@the clown prince.....Your spot on. Brasil also has a chance to win the world cup even though they are the Confed Cup champions.

My only issue with Brasil though is a team who defends well can stop Brasil. I am not sure how closely you followed the CONMEBOL wc qualifiers, but some of their poor results were against teams who are compact and defend well and don't allow Brasil play their counterattacking footy. Brasil would actually benefit playing a team like Spain who will try to attack them.

2006 was great - nicely, very nicely organized by Germany- great stadiums, always packed, and of course, I *LOVED* how it ended! 1998 was also good. well-staged, and finally France won (I'm no fan of France trust me - but that team, at that time deserved to win. They had been building momentum for a while, so it was a well-deserved win and a fair tournament). Didn't turn out so good for Italy, but at least we lost to the eventual champs, and only on PKs. 2002 - TOTALLY, TOTALLY SUCKED! a corrupt tournament from the get-go. Corrupt refs disallowing valid goals (Italy and then Spain know something about this) to favor the Koreans. This WC ought to be removed from the record books. FIFA -REALLY- blew this one.

That's odd, because there are other things u should consider too:

1. Beckenbaur won World Cup 1974 as a captain and then 16 years later won World Cup 1990 as a Coach. Carlos Dunga won World Cup 1994 as a captain, next year is 2010, exactly 16 years after 1994, doesn't that make Dunga got just the same chance to win?

2. Lionel Messi will most likely win Ballon D'Or this year, and whenever a player won Ballon D'or award, he and his country won't win the World Cup in the next year. Thus, Messi won't win World Cup 2010 with Argentina.

Facts of Ballon D'Or winner and WC history :

1957 = Alfredo Di Stefano of Spain (WC 1958 winner : Brazil)

1961 = Omar Sivori of Italy (WC 1962 winner : Brazil)

1965 = Eusebio of Portugal (WC 1966 winner : England)

1969 = Gianni Rivera of Italy (WC 1970 winner : Brazil)

1973 = Johan Cruyff of Holland (WC 1974 winner : Germany)

1977 = Allon Simonsen of Denmark (WC 1978 winner : Argentina)

1981 = Karl-Heinze of Germany (WC 1982 winner : Italy)

1985 = Michel Platini of France (WC 1986 winner : Argentina)

1989 = Van Basten of Holland (WC 1990 winner : Germany)

1993 = Roberto Baggio of Italy (WC 1994 winner : Brazil)

1997 = Ronaldo of Brazil (WC 1998 winner : France)

2001 = Michael Owen of England (WC 2002 winner : Brazil)

2005 = Ronaldinho of Brazil (WC 2006 winner : Italy)

3. Lionel Messi will most likely win FIFA World Player of The Year this year, and whenever a player won FIFA World Player of The Year, he and his country won't win the World Cup in the next year. Thus, Messi won't win World Cup 2010 with Argentina.

Facts of FIFA World Player of The Year winner and WC history :

1993 = Roberto Baggio of Italy (WC 1994 winner : Brazil)

1997 = Ronaldo of Brazil (WC 1998 winner : France)

2001 = Luis Figo of Portugal (WC 2002 winner : Brazil)

2005 = Ronaldinho of Brazil (WC 2006 winner : Italy)

There are lots of other evidences that Argentina won't win World Cup 2010 next year, but for now, I rest my case.

In case records are meant to be broken, then doesn't that mean Brazil got the same chance with Argentina?

No Confed Cup winner ever won the World Cup next year after. Brazil could also break that record, right?

Argentina must change their coach and bring in someone who can get the beast out of Messi. Samuel, milito, Aimr should be in the first 11

I agree with some of what you said. Argentina biggest TWO problems are the back four and no creative midfielder... That can easily be fix IF Maradona wants to...
