In my mind, it's the famous English goal in the World Cup 1966 final against Germany, in the first half of extra-time. The ball, fired by Geoff Hurst (by the way, the only player in history to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final) hit the crossbar then bounced down and out, but dit it really cross the line? Many replays over the years did not prove it.

The English, who had the advantage of playing all their games at Wembley, eventually won the title, beating Germany 4-2, after another goal scored in the last seconds of extra-time.

Of course, Diego Armando Maradona's "mano de Dios" goal, in the quarter-final match of the 1986 World Cup between England and Argentina, is to be considered also, thinking of your "holy goal" hint.

The Maradona goal was definitely controversial, but even Maradona admits that he knocked the goal in with his hand. I think the most debated goal in World Cup history is actually the one that Geoff Hurst of England scored vs Germany in the World Cup final in 1966. The goal was given by the referee, but every TV replay of the goal has been inconclusive. This goal is more controversial and important than the Maradona goal because it was in a final, it was the the winning goal and it was scored in extra time. Video of the entire game, including the goal, is on Fifa's website:

It has to be the famous 'hand of God' goal that Diego Maradonna scored against England in the 1986 World Cup Quarter Final.

I'll say it's England's third goal in extra time against Germany in the 1966 final. Most peolple still do not believe that the ball crossed the line and T.V replays have been inconclusive.

I think that goal is more controversial than Maradona's goal

It has to be the "HAND OF GOD" by Diego Maradona against England in the 1986 quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Probably the one where the Columbian guy hit a ball in his own goal and was later killed when he returned to Columbia. I think it was in the 1994.

Diego Maradona's hand of god, of course. Maradona could not reach a ball in the air with his head, so he hit it with his hand. Thanks for the hint.
